1 Samuel 17:4, 7, 50 NKJV - "And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. ... Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels; and a shield-bearer went before him. ... So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David."
2 Samuel 21:19 NKJV - "Again there was war at Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed [the brother of] Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam."
[Gittite, equal to “of Gath.” The words “the brother of” are inserted in the Authorized Version to avoid the contradiction, 2 Samuel 21:22 (These four were born to the giant in Gath ….) would seem to necessitate the words “son of.”]
Answer:
The first incident in “I Samuel 17:4, 7, and 50” occurred, when David was not a king. This is the main incident in the life of David and Saul. The second incident in 2 Samuel 21:19 occurred, when David was a king of the Israelites. In these two incidents, there is a gap of long time.
In these days we are commonly seeing that there are so many persons with same names. Likewise, the name of Goliath also christened to other persons. If we inquire about the name of John, Peter, etc., we can find so many persons in one area. Just because of both of them used spears doesn’t make them same person. Now a days we are commonly seeing that our soldiers have same weapons, same AK 47 guns without any differentiation likewise spears are common in those days. In this, is there any contradiction?
